Divemaster Certification
The Divemaster course is the foundation of entry into professional diving. You’ll learn to work safely with divers of all levels, assist with training courses, and demonstrate mastery of diving skills and knowledge.

Divemaster Apprenticeship:
Our exclusive Divemaster Apprenticeship program takes your certification further. It’s designed for divers who want real-world experience, mentorship under our professional instructors, and preparation for teaching roles. The apprenticeship makes you job-ready for diving and instructional positions with Columbus Scuba.
Divemaster Course Prerequisites
- PADI Rescue Diver certification (or equivalent from another agency)
- Minimum 40 logged dives
- 18 years of age (15 years for Junior Divemaster)
- Medically evaluated and cleared for diving by a physician within 12 months.
Open Water Scuba Instructor Certification
The OWSI is your entry into scuba instruction. You’ll learn to teach PADI courses, manage students safely, and demonstrate instructor-level diving competency and knowledge.
Our In-House IDC Program:
Columbus Scuba offers a comprehensive Instructor Development Course (IDC) that prepares you for the PADI Instructor Exam (IE). This in-house IDC is required before you can sit for the IE exam and is designed to ensure you’re fully prepared to teach safely and effectively.
Our IDC goes beyond test prep—it’s mentorship and real-world teaching preparation. You’ll work directly with our experienced instructors, assist with live student courses, and gain practical teaching experience in our facility. By the time you take the IE, you’ll be confident in your abilities and ready to start teaching.
Divemaster Course Prerequisites

- Minimum 60 logged dives and 100 dives to attend an IE.
- 18 years of age
- Medically evaluated and cleared for diving by a physician within 12 months.

Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT)

Build on your OWSI rating by certifying at keast 25 PADI Divers and by earning five or more PADI Specialty Instructor certifications.
IDC Staff Instructor

Professional Certification FAQs
Do I need to be a certified diver to start professional training?
Yes. To begin Divemaster training, you must be a PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent) with a minimum of 40 logged dives. To pursue OWSI (Open Water Scuba Instructor) and beyond, you must first be certified as a Divemaster. If you don’t meet these prerequisites yet, we can help you get certified and build your logged dives before starting professional courses.
How long does it take to become a Divemaster?
Timing depends on your diving experience, schedule, and how quickly you progress. We work with each candidate individually to create a training plan. Some candidates complete Divemaster certification in a few weeks, while others take longer. If you’re interested in our Divemaster Apprenticeship, which is designed for deeper experience and hands-on training, you should plan for at least 12 months. We’ll discuss your goals and timeline during the inquiry process.
What comes after Divemaster?
After Divemaster, you can pursue Assistant Instructor (AI) and then Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) certifications. From there, you can continue to Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT), IDC Staff Instructor, and Master Instructor ratings.
Can I teach immediately after getting my OWSI?
Yes. Upon completing your OWSI certification with Columbus Scuba, you’re immediately eligible to teach and assist with courses at our facility. You’ll be working as a contractor and can build real teaching experience with our student base.
What is the IDC and why is it required?
The Instructor Development Course (IDC) prepares you for the PADI Instructor Exam (IE). It’s required before you can take the IE and ensures you’re fully prepared to teach safely and effectively. The IDC includes mentorship, hands-on teaching practice, and comprehensive exam preparation.
