How the PADI Open Water Course Works
Our PADI Open Water certification follows a proven three-part structure: knowledge development (eLearning), confined water training (pool), and open water checkout dives (local quarry).
Here’s your step-by-step journey to becoming a certified diver.
Step 1
eLearning and Knowledge Development
Start learning right. away with PADI eLearning—an interactive online course you complete at your own pace before your pool sessions. You’ll learn:

- Basic diving physics and physiology
- Safety procedures and dive planning
- Underwater communication
- Environmental awareness
Time commitment: 8-12 hours (self-paced, typically completed in 1-2 weeks)

Upon Booking your open water course, you will recieve your PADI eLearning within 1 business day of your purchase.
Step 2
Confined Water Training (Pool Sessions)
Put your eLearning knowledge into practice in our safe, comfortable pool environment.
You’ll master essential scuba skills with experienced instructors guiding you every step of the way.
What you’ll learn:
- Setting up and using scuba equipment
- Buoyancy control
- Clearing your mask and regulator
- Emergency procedures
- Snorkeling and skin diving techniques
Group Lessons: 4 pool sessions (one per week for 4 weeks)
Flex Lessons: 2 pool sessions (scheduled at your convenience)
Included In Course Cost: Pool entry fees, rental equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, tanks, weights), Instructor and Divemaster fees
You’ll need your own mask, fins, snorkel, and boots. We can help you choose the right gear or offer rentals.
Step 3
Open Water Checkout Dives
The final step is applying everything you’ve learned in real open water conditions. You’ll complete four open water dives at a local Ohio quarry or during a CSI trip under instructor supervision.
What to expect:
- 4 dives over 2 days (typically a weekend)
- Maximum depth: 60 feet
- Practice almost all the skills learned in the pool
- Navigate underwater
- Explore a real dive site with underwater attractions
Schedule: Open water dives available May through October. They are booked seperately from group lessons on a first-come, first-served basis
Course Cost: $35 registration fee per student. This fee covers rental equipment and instructor fees. Dive site fees and airfills will be paid seperately by each student. This fee does not apply to Referral Checkout Dives or Private Checkout DivesÂ
After successfully completing your open water dives, you’ll receive your PADI Open Water Diver certification card, recognized worldwide!

PADI Open Water Course Requirements
Age and Swimming Ability
PADI Open Water Diver enrollment requirements:
Minimum age: 10 years old*
Swimming requirement: Complete a 200-yard swim (any stroke) and 10-minute float/tread. Both conducted during your first pool session
*Students ages 10-14 earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification (same training, depth limit of 40 feet until age 15).
Don’t worry if you’re not an Olympic swimmer, basic comfort in the water is all you need. Our instructors will help you build confidence from day one.
Medical and Health Considerations
PADI requires all students to complete a medical questionnaire before training. If you answer “yes” to any medical questions, you’ll need physician clearance to dive.
Most people are cleared to dive by their physician.

How long does scuba certification take?
The PADI Open Water course typically takes 4-6 weeks from start to certification:
- eLearning: 1-2 weeks (self-paced, 8-12 hours total)
- Pool training: 4 sessions over 4 weeks (group) or 2 sessions over 1-2 weeks (flex)
- Open water dives: 1 weekend (2 days, 4 dives)
Flex lessons can be completed faster if you have a flexible schedule.

Do I need my own scuba gear?

What if I'm nervous or not a strong swimmer?
It’s totally normal to feel nervous! Many of our students start with little swimming experience or anxiety about being underwater.
Here’s how we help:
