PADI Rescue Diver Course Overview
 Course Price: $389
PADI Rescue Diver is the course that challenges you mentally, pushes your skills, and builds the kind of confidence that makes you a better diver in every situation. Unlike Open Water and Advanced Open Water, which focus on your own diving skills, Rescue Diver shifts your attention outward, teaching you to recognize potential problems in other divers and respond effectively when things go wrong.
Rescue Diver training fundamentally changes the way you think about diving. You’ll develop awareness of your surroundings, understand diver psychology under stress, and gain the ability to prevent small problems from becoming big emergencies.
Why Become A Rescue Diver:
You’ll learn to manage dive emergencies you’ve probably never thought about. Through realistic scenario-based training, you’ll practice responding to panicked divers, unconscious divers at the surface and underwater, missing diver searches, and dive accidents requiring emergency assistance. Every exercise is designed to build your confidence so that if an emergency happens, you know exactly what to do.

Rescue Diver FAQs
How long does Rescue Diver certification take?
The PADI Rescue Diver course takes approximately 2-3 weeks from start to certification. eLearning is 6-8 hours and you complete it at your own pace before training. Open water training is 2 full days, typically consecutive weekend days. Most students complete eLearning over 1-2 weeks, then attend both training days on a single weekend. You can earn your Rescue Diver certification in as little as 2-3 weeks.
Do I need Advanced Open Water first?
Yes. PADI requires at least Adventure Diver certification with Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive completed before you can enroll in Rescue Diver. In practice, most students complete Advanced Open Water before Rescue Diver because AOW builds the foundational skills Rescue Diver requires, increases your maximum depth to 100 feet, and is recommended before Rescue Diver by most instructors. Don’t have AOW yet? Complete it first, then move on to Rescue Diver. Many divers complete both within a few months.
What is Emergency First Response (EFR)?
Emergency First Response is CPR and First Aid training required for Rescue Diver certification. EFR teaches CPR for adults, children, and infants, first aid for injuries and sudden illnesses, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and emergency oxygen administration. EFR must be current within 24 months to enroll in Rescue Diver. Columbus Scuba offers Emergency First Response certification. You can complete EFR before Rescue Diver or alongside your Rescue course, just let us know when booking.
How much does Rescue Diver cost?
The Rescue Diver course is $389 and includes PADI eLearning access, 2 full days of open water rescue training, professional instruction, and PADI certification processing. Additional costs include Emergency First Response (EFR) certification required separately, equipment rental with 20% discount for Rescue students, dive site entry fees, and personal gear if you don’t have it. Rewards members save 5% by joining the free Columbus Scuba Rewards program.
Is Rescue Diver physically demanding?
Yes, Rescue Diver is a physically challenging certification course. You’ll practice towing tired or panicked divers at the surface, surfacing unconscious divers from depth, removing divers from the water, performing in-water rescue breathing, and managing multiple rescue scenarios. Physical requirements include ability to swim 400 meters continuously, tread water for 15 minutes, transport another diver at the surface, and remove an unconscious diver from water. If you’re comfortable diving and in reasonable physical condition, you can complete Rescue Diver. The skills are challenging but achievable.
Will I really have to rescue an unconscious diver underwater?
This skill will be practiced with alert and responsive instructor or divemaster simulating an unconcious diver. While we hope no one ever needs to surface an unconcious diver in the real world, it is an important skill to learn. You will learn to recognize an unconscious diver at depth, establish buoyancy control, maintain an open airway, and safely surface the victim. You’ll rehearse each step multiple times in controlled conditions under your instructor supervision.
Can I take Rescue Diver if I'm nervous about emergencies?
Yes! In fact, divers who are nervous about emergencies are often the ones who benefit most from Rescue Diver. You learn exactly what to do in emergencies, and knowledge reduces fear. Practice builds confidence through repetition. Understanding diver psychology helps you recognize and manage your own stress. You develop problem-solving skills that make you calmer underwater. Many nervous divers report that Rescue Diver was the course that finally made them feel truly confident and safe as a diver.
What happens after I complete Rescue Diver?
After successfully completing all rescue exercises, scenarios, and the emergency assistance plan, you receive your PADI Rescue Diver certification. The Divemaster pathway opens, meaning you’re now qualified to pursue professional training. You gain enhanced diving confidence and awareness. Your Rescue certification is recognized worldwide. Next steps include continuing to Divemaster if interested in professional diving, taking specialty courses like Deep Diver or Search and Recovery, joining Columbus Scuba dive trips with your new skills and confidence, and diving knowing you can prevent and manage emergencies.
